Spotify is expanding its video capabilities with a new monetization program for video podcasts, alongside several other video-focused features. The announcement came during the company's "Now Playing" event, presented by co-president and CTO Gustav Söderström.

Key Features of the New Program:

  • Open to creators in the US, Canada, UK, and Australia
  • Requires minimum 10,000 streamed hours in past 30 days
  • Revenue from both Spotify and other platforms
  • Premium subscription revenue sharing for video content
  • Ad-free viewing experience for Premium subscribers
  • Integration with membership platforms like Patreon and Substack

Video consumption on Spotify has seen significant growth, with 64% of listeners now preferring video podcasts in 2024, up from 43% in 2021. Over 250 million users have watched video podcasts on the platform.

New Video Features Include:

  • Customizable video thumbnails
  • Enhanced analytics dashboard
  • Thumbnail scrubbing
  • Pinch to zoom capability
  • Video chapters
  • Support for 90-second short-form video previews

The program launches January 2nd through Spotify for Creators (formerly Spotify for Podcasters). Revenue sharing will be based on streaming volume, with higher engagement leading to increased earnings.
