TikTok US Traffic Recovers to 90% Despite Recent App Store Removal and Shutdown
TikTok's US traffic has largely recovered to pre-shutdown levels, with current usage only about 10% below normal, according to Cloudflare Radar data. This comes after the app experienced an 85% usage drop during its temporary shutdown earlier this month.

The platform's resilience follows significant regulatory challenges, including:
- Removal from Google and Apple app stores
- A 14-hour complete shutdown
- Ongoing legal requirements for ByteDance to divest US operations
While TikTok alternatives like RedNote saw brief traffic spikes during the shutdown, these gains quickly dissipated once TikTok resumed operations. According to David Belson, head of data insight at Cloudflare Radar, "DNS traffic for TikTok-related domains has continued to recover since service restoration."
The shutdown occurred after the Supreme Court upheld President Biden's law requiring ByteDance to sell its US TikTok operations or face a ban. However, President Trump's executive order extended the deadline to April 5, though the app remains unavailable in major app stores.
Several prominent figures have expressed interest in acquiring TikTok's US operations, including:
- Frank McCourt
- Kevin O'Leary
- MrBeast
- Elon Musk
- Larry Ellison
Meanwhile, creators continue to maintain their presence on TikTok, while some diversify to platforms like YouTube Shorts and Instagram Reels. Meta has been actively courting creators with promotional deals to prioritize Instagram content.
