Loops is a new short-form video platform positioning itself as a decentralized alternative to TikTok. Created by Daniel Supernault, the developer behind Pixelfed, Loops aims to provide a safer, more moderated environment for sharing looping videos.
Key Features:
- Target audience: Users 13 and older
- Focus on short, looping videos
- Built-in moderation system using trust scores
- Planned ActivityPub integration for fediverse compatibility
- Funded through user donations and potential grants
The platform implements a trust-score system for content moderation:
- New users with low trust scores have videos held for review
- Regular posters with good track records can post instantly
- Trust scores also filter problematic comments
- Content warnings are applied based on trust metrics
Current Platform Status:
- Sign-ups are open but invite-only
- Android app coming via APK (outside Play Store)
- iOS app pending TestFlight approval
- No web interface planned initially
Loops operates as a sub-project under Pixelfed, similar to Instagram's Reels feature, but with a focus on decentralization and user privacy. The platform's timing could be strategic, potentially benefiting from any future TikTok restrictions in the United States, similar to how Bluesky gained users during Twitter's temporary ban in Brazil.
