After nearly 20 years, the internet's most mysterious song has finally been identified. The track, which was recorded from German radio in the 1980s, sparked a massive online investigation that culminated in its recent discovery.

The journey began when Lydia (known as bluuely on Reddit) shared a digital copy of the song in 2007, seeking information about its origin. The recording was believed to be from NDR1's program "Musik Für Junge Leute" (Music for Young People).

The investigation gained significant momentum in 2019 when Reddit user gabgaskins shared the song across 44 music-related subreddits, leading to the creation of r/TheMysteriousSong. The mystery attracted widespread attention, including coverage from Rolling Stone magazine.

The breakthrough came through research into Hörfest, an annual Hamburg music festival. A Redditor named marijin1412 discovered a newspaper article about a band called FEX from Kiel, who won a talent contest in 1984. Further investigation led to Michael Hädrich, a former member of the band Phret, who confirmed the song was titled "Subways of Your Mind."

Hädrich, surprised by the song's internet fame, has since registered it with GEMA, a German music rights organization. A complete, cleaner version of the track is now available on Vocaroo.
