Sonos Cancels Development of High-End Streaming Video Player 'Pinewood'
Sonos has halted development of its streaming video player, codenamed 'Pinewood,' which was scheduled for release in late 2025. This decision comes amid significant company changes, including the departure of CEO Patrick Spence and the appointment of interim CEO Tom Conrad.

Project Pinewood aimed to compete with high-end streaming devices like Apple TV, offering:
- Universal search and content aggregation
- HDMI switching capabilities
- Gaming console pass-through support
- Enhanced surround sound configurations
- Integration with various streaming apps
The cancellation leaves Sonos without a major product launch for the latter half of 2025. The development team will be reassigned to other internal projects as the company focuses on improving its recently revamped app, which has faced criticism from users for missing features present in the previous version.
The streaming device market is currently dominated by established players including Apple, Google, Amazon, and Roku. While Sonos maintains its partnership with The Trade Desk, which was set to provide the operating system for Pinewood, the company appears to be prioritizing its core audio business and addressing existing customer concerns.
Nick Millington, Sonos' Chief Innovation Officer and the project's champion, is now leading efforts to enhance the company's app experience to meet customer expectations for a premium speaker ecosystem.
