Songwriter Melvin "4rest" Moore has filed a copyright infringement lawsuit against R&B singer Chloe Bailey, Parkwood Entertainment, and Columbia Records. The lawsuit centers on three songs from Bailey's album "Trouble In Paradise": "Favorite," "Might As Well," and "Same Lingerie."
Moore claims he wasn't properly credited or compensated for his contributions to these songs, which he says were written from his personal experiences. While he is credited as a songwriter on "Same Lingerie" and "Might As Well" in BMI's Songview repertory, he notably lacks credit for "Favorite."
The lawsuit alleges multiple violations, including:
- Copyright infringement
- Fraudulent misrepresentation
- Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) violations
- Civil conspiracy
- Deceptive business practices
Moore attempted to resolve the issue through good-faith negotiations for nearly 200 days and issued a DMCA takedown notice before pursuing legal action. Speaking to Rolling Stone, he highlighted his personal struggle, including a two-year period of homelessness, emphasizing his fight for fair compensation in the industry.
The songwriter is seeking:
- Up to $150,000 for each intentional violation
- Court order to halt commercial use of the songs
- Investigation of revenue from unauthorized use
- Repayment of all related profits
- Proper crediting
- Punitive damages of $5 million per song
