The project joins a roster of anticipated musical biopics featuring iconic artists like Bob Dylan, Led Zeppelin, and The Beatles. Woodley, who will both star in and produce the film, expressed her deep connection to Joplin's story, describing the legendary singer as someone who "brought light to this planet in a singular way."
Initially apprehensive about the singing requirements, Woodley worked closely with renowned music producer Linda Perry to develop her vocal abilities. Perry's unconventional training methods included having Woodley perform impromptu sessions with a full band in empty warehouses, helping the actress discover her own voice rather than merely imitating Joplin.
The California Film Commission has awarded the project a $2.5 million tax credit. Production is scheduled to span 30 days with approximately $10 million in qualified expenditures.
