Jazz and R&B icon Marlena Shaw, best known for her definitive recording of "California Soul," passed away at age 81 on January 19. Her daughter Marla confirmed the news via Facebook, stating that Shaw died peacefully surrounded by family.

Born September 22, 1942, in New Rochelle, New York, Shaw began her career singing in jazz clubs during the 1960s. Her distinctive style was characterized by raw honesty and a direct approach that stripped away artifice, earning her acclaim in both jazz and R&B circles.

Her 1969 rendition of "California Soul," originally written by Ashford and Simpson, became the definitive version of the song. The recording's influence extended far beyond its initial release, being sampled in over 30 hip-hop tracks including works by Gang Starr, Nightmares on Wax, and Jay Electronica. The song has also featured prominently in popular media, appearing in "The Italian Job" (2003), "The Lincoln Lawyer" (2022), and Grand Theft Auto V.
