Americans spend 74% of their daily audio time listening to music rather than podcasts or other spoken content, according to new Edison Research findings. Here's how music listening breaks down across different platforms in the United States:

For listeners aged 13 and older:

  • AM/FM radio and radio streams: 32%
  • Streaming services (Spotify, Apple, Amazon, etc.): 28%
  • YouTube music and music videos: 18%
  • SiriusXM: 9%
  • Owned music (vinyl, CD, digital files): 9%
  • Music channels on TV: 3%

The data shifts slightly for the 13-64 age group, where streaming services lead at 31%, narrowly surpassing AM/FM radio by one percentage point.

Edison Research attributes music's dominance to the vast available library spanning hundreds of years, accessible across multiple platforms. The extensive musical catalog, from classical composers to contemporary artists, provides listeners with significantly more content options compared to podcasts and audiobooks.

Edison Research will present its complete Top 10 Findings of 2024 in an upcoming webinar on December 10, followed by the fifth anniversary Latino Podcast Listener Report on December 17, featuring new insights about Latino podcast listeners and creator interviews.
