A group of 17 Republican legislators expressed concerns about the use of taxpayer money to support what they describe as "lewd" and "offensive" performances. The letter, addressed to the Greater New Orleans Sports Foundation and the Louisiana Stadium and Expo District, specifically criticizes recent performances by:

  • Rihanna's 2023 performance for offensive lyrics
  • Jennifer Lopez's 2020 show
  • The 2004 Janet Jackson and Justin Timberlake performance

The legislators argue that since Louisiana taxpayers contribute financially to hosting the Super Bowl, they should have input on the content of these performances. They request that future contracts for state-funded facilities include provisions ensuring performers adhere to "Louisiana's community decency standards."

While the contracts for Super Bowl LIX are already finalized, making the letter largely symbolic, it highlights ongoing tensions between entertainment industry standards and local community values. The legislators' stance notably contrasts with New Orleans' reputation for entertainment, particularly in areas like Bourbon Street.

The letter emphasizes that while many Louisianians support bringing the Super Bowl to New Orleans, taxpayers with families have expressed serious concerns about the family-friendliness of recent halftime performances.
