SOM Produce, which sells over 750,000 tickets annually, manages five major Madrid theatres with a combined capacity of 5,200 seats:
- Nuevo Teatro Alcalá
- Teatro Rialto
- Teatro Nuevo Apolo
- Teatro Calderón
- Teatro Amaya
The company is known for producing Spanish-language versions of popular shows including West Side Story, Mamma Mia!, and the upcoming Wicked production.
This acquisition follows ATG's recent purchase of Celebrity Attractions, a Tulsa-based company that produces shows throughout the Southwest and Midwest United States.
Madrid represents one of the world's largest theatre markets, following only London's West End and Broadway in terms of global theatre demand. SOM CEO Marcos Cámara noted that this partnership with ATG will help meet growing demand for theatre and live performances throughout Spain.
ATG CEO Ted Stimpson described the acquisition as "an exciting opportunity to further build ATG's European operations." Industry expert Lisbeth Barron, whose firm served as SOM's financial advisor, highlighted emerging theatre markets in Germany, Australia, and South Korea as additional growth opportunities.
The deal reflects growing investment interest in theatre entertainment. Blackstone recently acquired a minority stake in ATG, which now operates nearly 70 venues. Meanwhile, Providence Equity sold Superstruct Entertainment, a European live-music company operating 80 festivals, to KKR for approximately $1.4 billion.
Despite challenges in the festival sector, with over 170 cancellations last year, the theatre industry continues to demonstrate resilience and growth potential in key global markets.
