Anthropic Nears $2 Billion Funding Round, Soaring to $60 Billion Valuation
Anthropic is finalizing a $2 billion funding round that values the AI company at over $60 billion - more than triple its valuation from last year. The round is being led by Lightspeed Venture Partners.
Amazon remains a major backer, having invested a total of $8 billion in Anthropic through two rounds: $4 billion in September 2023 and another $4 billion in November 2024, structured as a convertible note.
The $60 billion valuation, which includes this latest funding, would make Anthropic the 5th most valuable U.S. startup according to CB Insights. This positions them in the upper echelon of AI companies, though still behind OpenAI's $157 billion valuation and ahead of Elon Musk's xAI at $50 billion.

Recent performance metrics show Anthropic generating approximately $875 million in annualized revenue, primarily from business customers. For comparison, OpenAI expects to generate $3.7 billion from ChatGPT premium subscriptions.
Anthropic has recently committed to maintaining content guardrails to prevent copyrighted material from appearing in AI responses, while retaining flexibility to improve these systems as long as their effectiveness isn't reduced.
