The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced a significant change for the 2025 Oscars ceremony: nominated songs will not be performed live during the event. This decision was revealed in an email to Academy members on January 22, just before the nominations announcement.

The 97th Academy Awards, hosted by Conan O'Brien, will instead focus on celebrating the songwriters through personal reflections from the creative teams. This change comes amid ongoing recovery efforts from recent Los Angeles-area wildfires and follows a broader industry trend, notably after songwriters boycotted Spotify's Grammy celebration event.

Key Changes for the 2025 Ceremony:

  • No live performances of nominated songs
  • Enhanced focus on songwriters' stories and creative processes
  • Return of "Fab 5" moments highlighting individual film artists
  • Special emphasis on teamwork and collaborative filmmaking

The Academy's CEO Bill Kramer and President Janet Young emphasized that the ceremony will celebrate the unifying spirit of moviemaking while acknowledging those who fought against the wildfires. They promised "powerful musical moments" connecting film's history to its future, despite the absence of live song performances.
