Prior to the murder, Young Dolph had survived multiple assassination attempts, including shootings in Los Angeles (2017) and Charlotte, NC. The rapper had previously upgraded his vehicles with bulletproof panels due to these threats.

A potential connection to rapper Soulja Boy is being investigated after he allegedly offered a $100,000 bounty for information about Dolph's whereabouts shortly before the murder. As a precautionary measure, Soulja Boy was removed from the Millennium Tour to prevent potential violence.
