Trump Extends TikTok Ban Deadline by 75 Days While App Stores Maintain Block
President Trump has granted TikTok a 75-day extension on its potential ban in the United States, though Apple and Google continue blocking new app installations on their stores.
The executive order provides ByteDance additional time to address national security concerns and comply with requirements to divest from TikTok. Trump has emphasized the need for at least 50% U.S. ownership of the platform.
During discussions with reporters, Trump stated that the U.S. should receive half of TikTok's value, suggesting the deal could be worth around $500 billion. He emphasized that without his approval, the platform would be "worthless," but with a deal in place, it could potentially be valued at "maybe a trillion dollars."
Trump has mentioned the possibility of a joint venture ownership structure, though details remain unclear. When questioned about TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew's stance on this proposal, Trump simply stated, "he's around."
Addressing security concerns, Trump highlighted TikTok's young user base, stating, "TikTok is largely about kids, young kids. If China is going to get information about young kids out of it, to be honest, I think we have bigger problems than that."
The developments come as Chinese Vice President Han Zheng attended the recent presidential inauguration, representing China instead of President Xi Jinping, who had received an invitation from Trump. This marks a departure from traditional protocol, where typically ambassadors attend presidential inaugurations.
