TikTok is expanding its Add to Music App feature to include full-album pre-saves, allowing users to save complete albums to music streaming services like Spotify and Apple Music before their release.

The feature, which launched about a year ago and recently expanded to 163 additional countries, enables users to automatically add upcoming albums to their streaming library upon release. For example, users can already pre-save upcoming albums like Blackpink's Rosé's December release "Rosie."

This expansion comes amid several challenges for TikTok:

  • A January 19th deadline to either sell or shut down operations in the U.S. under the Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act
  • Lawsuits from U.S. states regarding the app's effects on children
  • Legal action in Brazil seeking $530 million in damages over data protection and mental health concerns
  • Licensing disputes with independent music distributors following a split with Merlin

TikTok faces increasing competition from platforms like YouTube Shorts, Instagram Reels, Triller, Loops, and Connyct. The success of the album pre-save feature will depend on both its full-scale implementation and TikTok's ability to navigate these operational challenges.

The feature's impact on album promotion remains to be evaluated, though established artists are expected to benefit from this enhanced marketing capability.
