TikTok and its Chinese counterpart Douyin have become the first non-gaming apps to exceed $6 billion in annual in-app purchases, according to latest data from Sensor Tower. The platform achieved a record-breaking $1.9 billion in gross IAP revenue during Q4 2024 alone.

Key achievements:

  • Revenue more than doubled compared to any other app or game in 2024
  • Nearest competitor Monopoly Go earned $2.6 billion
  • $4.4 billion increase from 2023
  • Second most downloaded app in Q4 2024, after Instagram

The platform's success stems from two main revenue streams:

  1. Virtual gifts system where users purchase tokens to support creators (TikTok retains 50% of payouts)
  2. Growing e-commerce integration, particularly strong in Douyin's Chinese market

While TikTok focuses on expanding its shopping features for Western audiences, Douyin continues to dominate the Chinese market with stricter data regulations and a more developed e-commerce ecosystem.

Having already reached $10 billion in total consumer spending in 2023, TikTok's growth trajectory suggests even higher numbers for 2025, especially with recent ban concerns subsiding.
