Thom Yorke, ABBA's Björn Ulvaeus Join 11,500 Artists Demanding AI Training Regulations
Over 11,500 creatives, including notable artists Thom Yorke, Björn Ulvaeus, Max Richter, and Billy Bragg, have signed a petition demanding stronger regulations for AI training data usage. The petition, organized by the Human Artistry Campaign, specifically opposes the UK government's proposed copyright law changes that would allow AI companies to train on copyrighted works without licensing.
The petition emphasizes that unauthorized use of creative works for AI training poses a significant threat to creators' livelihoods. This movement comes amid multiple ongoing lawsuits in the United States against AI companies, including OpenAI, Anthropic, and Perplexity.
Recent legal action includes a lawsuit filed by the owners of the Wall Street Journal and New York Post against Perplexity. They allege the company copied hundreds of thousands of articles without permission for its retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) database. The publishers claim Perplexity ignored licensing requests and uses their content in ways that don't qualify as fair use.
