Ali Jones originally filed the lawsuit alongside Murphy Lee, Kyjuan, and City Spud in September. However, Lee, Kyjuan, and Spud quickly clarified they never agreed to be part of the legal action and requested removal from the case.
The updated lawsuit, filed November 22, now solely represents Ali's claims against Nelly. Ali's attorney, Precious Felder Gates, confirmed to Billboard that her client will continue pursuing unpaid royalties.
Key points about the dispute:
- The St. Lunatics, formed by high school friends from St. Louis, gained recognition in the late 90s with "Gimme What U Got"
- Their group album "Free City" reached #1 on Billboard 200, releasing after Nelly's solo album
- Ali claims Nelly "repeatedly manipulated" the group regarding payment for their work on his solo album
- The three withdrawn members recently performed with Nelly at the American Music Awards
The updated lawsuit now includes HarbourView Equity Partners as a defendant, following Nelly's $50 million catalog sale to them last year. The company hasn't responded to media requests for comment.
