Australia's premier music festival Splendour in the Grass has announced its cancellation for 2024, marking the second consecutive year the event won't take place. Festival organizers cited the need for a "breather" to recharge and plan future events.

The festival, which has been running since 2001 and is operated by Live Nation-backed Secret Sounds, has struggled to secure high-caliber international headliners for this year's event. Previously, the festival has featured renowned artists such as Kendrick Lamar, Tame Impala, The Strokes, Lizzo, and Coldplay.

This cancellation reflects a broader trend of challenges facing the festival industry. Rising operational costs and difficulties in securing headline acts have led to several major event cancellations globally. For instance, the Africa Oyé music festival in Liverpool has also announced a break for 2025, despite recording attendance records in 2024.

The situation has become so critical in the UK that the Association of Independent Festivals (AIF) is actively seeking government intervention, specifically requesting a reduction in VAT to 5% on ticket sales to help sustain the industry.

While organizers promise to return "bigger and better when the time is right," they've hinted at new developments for Australian music lovers, encouraging fans to stay tuned for upcoming announcements in the coming months.
