Sony has unveiled 'Soneium,' a new Ethereum layer 2 blockchain aimed at creating innovative services across the Sony Group's businesses and intellectual property portfolio.

Developed by Sony Block Solutions Labs, Soneium is designed as a public blockchain with an open network accessible to all participants. The platform will enable comprehensive web3 solutions, from infrastructure to applications, moving beyond traditional partial service offerings.

Users can interact with Soneium through compatible applications, including web3 games and NFT marketplaces, using their digital wallets. The blockchain ensures decentralized management of user activity compared to traditional internet services.

Key features and objectives:

  • Creation of new services integrating Sony Group businesses
  • Enhanced creator rights protection
  • New profit-sharing mechanisms for creators and fans
  • Seamless integration between digital and physical worlds
  • Development of use cases for web3 newcomers

Sony plans to release a testnet for developers soon, enabling collaborative application development both within and outside the Sony Group. The project is being developed in partnership with Startale Labs Pte Ltd., a Sony Group company focused on blockchain infrastructure development.
