Snapchat is launching Spotlight, a new feature that rewards top video creators with a share of $1 million daily throughout 2020. The prize can be awarded to a single creator or split among several top performers based on a proprietary algorithm.

Unlike traditional social media platforms, Spotlight doesn't require users to have public accounts or large followings to be eligible for rewards. The feature emphasizes creativity and fairness, making it possible for any user to go viral and earn rewards.

The new feature will be accessible through a dedicated tab in the app's lower-right corner. Initially, Spotlight will launch in eleven countries: United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, United Kingdom, Ireland, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Germany, and France, with plans for further expansion.

Snapchat emphasizes strict content moderation for Spotlight submissions. The platform prohibits:

  • False information and conspiracy theories
  • Hate speech
  • Explicit or profane content
  • Bullying and harassment
  • Violence

This initiative comes as Snapchat experiences significant growth, with daily users increasing 18% to 249 million in Q3 2020, and revenue jumping 52%. The move appears to be a strategic response to TikTok's success, offering creators a new platform with direct monetary incentives while maintaining strong community guidelines.

The platform's substantial daily payout demonstrates Snapchat's commitment to attracting and retaining content creators, potentially drawing users from other platforms like TikTok and Triller, especially amid ongoing uncertainties about TikTok's future in various markets.
