Roblox Enhances Child Safety With New DM Restrictions and Parental Controls
Roblox is implementing stricter safety measures for users under 13 years old, primarily focusing on direct messaging restrictions and enhanced parental controls.
Under the new rules, children under 13 cannot send private direct messages (DMs) to other users outside of specific games or experiences unless they have explicit parental permission. While public in-game messages remain visible, private messaging capabilities are now limited.
Roblox new parental control features
Key changes include:
- Restricted access to unrated experiences
- Blocked access to Social Hangouts and Free-Form User Creation experiences
- New parental control dashboard accessible via mobile app
- Detailed screen time monitoring and daily limit settings
- Push notification system for children to request access
These changes come in response to several concerning reports about child exploitation on the platform. Bloomberg Businessweek reported that U.S. police have arrested over two dozen people accused of grooming children on Roblox. Additionally, Hindenburg Research revealed how predators circumvent safety measures, including using morse code in profile messages to avoid detection.
Parents can now manage their children's Roblox activity through a dedicated mobile app, offering improved oversight and control compared to the previous device-specific settings.
