Penguin Random House has implemented strict new copyright language to protect authors' intellectual property from AI training usage. The updated wording explicitly prohibits using any part of their books "for the purpose of training artificial intelligence technologies or systems."

The new copyright notice will appear in all new titles and reprinted backlist books across all PRH imprints globally. It specifically reserves titles from text and data mining exceptions, aligning with European Parliament directives.

PRH UK CEO Tom Weldon emphasized that the publisher will "vigorously defend the intellectual property that belongs to our authors and artists."

Key actions taken by publishers to protect content from AI:

  • Implementation of explicit copyright language
  • Cease and desist letters to LLM platforms
  • Prevention of content scraping for AI training

Barbara Hayes, CEO of The Authors' Licensing & Collecting Society, praised PRH's initiative, encouraging other publishers to follow suit and urging AI companies to respect these restrictions.

While other major publishers like Pan Macmillan, Hachette, and Simon & Schuster declined to comment on potential similar measures, Faber has independently adopted an AI Policy restricting freelancers from using authors' content in AI programs for any purpose.
