The company previously attempted to secure Alex Cooper's "Call Me Daddy" podcast, though Cooper ultimately signed with SiriusXM for over $125 million. Netflix executives continue to pursue other specific content creators for their platform.

This move aligns with Netflix's recent success in late-night style programming, exemplified by John Mulaney's shows. After the successful six-week run of 'John Mulaney: Presents Everybody's in LA,' the platform extended his presence with a 12-week series titled 'Everybody's Live with John Mulaney.'

Video podcasts offer several advantages for Netflix:

  • Lower production costs compared to traditional TV shows
  • Rapid content creation and regular release schedules
  • Strong appeal to Gen Z (89% of whom consumed podcasts in 2024)
  • Potential to retain subscribers through consistent content delivery

Netflix's strategy may include:

  • Licensing existing podcasts
  • Creating exclusive in-house content
  • Establishing temporary exclusivity deals (typically 12 months)
  • Offering ad-free listening experiences

The platform's entry into video podcasting represents a strategic move to diversify content offerings while maintaining cost-effective production methods. This expansion could help Netflix capture a share of the growing video podcast market while providing viewers with regular, engaging content.
