Despite mounting losses, Meta remains committed to its metaverse vision. The company plans to invest $60-65 billion in AI computing infrastructure throughout 2025, which Zuckerberg considers crucial to their metaverse development.
Looking ahead, Meta is reportedly developing:
- Meta Quest 4 (expected release: 2026)
- A new high-end VR headset to compete with Apple Vision Pro
- Enhanced AI capabilities for metaverse applications
This continued investment comes despite historical precedent showing limited adoption of similar digital worlds, such as Second Life, which has existed for over 20 years without achieving mainstream success.
The journey began in 2014 when Facebook acquired Oculus for $2 billion following their successful Kickstarter campaign. Zuckerberg maintains that AR and VR represent the next major computing platform, despite the significant ongoing financial investment required.
