The Recording Academy has withdrawn J-Kwon's Grammy eligibility as a songwriter for Shaboozey's "A Bar Song (Tipsy)," which is nominated for 2024 Song of the Year. While the song interpolates J-Kwon's 2004 hit "Tipsy," the Academy's rules state that writers of sampled or interpolated material are only eligible for a certificate if the song wins, not the actual award.

Originally, Shaboozey's country hit credited J-Kwon (Jerrell C. Jones), Joe Kent, and Mark Williams as songwriters. However, the Recording Academy has now removed all three from consideration for the songwriting award.

"A Bar Song (Tipsy)" has achieved remarkable success, maintaining the #1 spot for 19 weeks, matching Lil Nas X's "Old Town Road" record. The song has helped earn Shaboozey five Grammy nominations, including Best Country Song, Best Country Solo Performance, and Song of the Year.

The Virginia native's rise to prominence includes significant collaborations with Beyoncé on her country album "Cowboy Carter," with their track "Spaghetti" receiving a nomination for Best Melodic Rap Performance.

Other 2025 Song of the Year nominees include:

  • Billie Eilish - "Birds of a Feather"
  • Lady Gaga and Bruno Mars - "Die With A Smile"
  • Taylor Swift and Post Malone - "Fortnight"
  • Chappell Roan - "Good Luck, Babe!"
  • Kendrick Lamar - "Not Like Us"
  • Sabrina Carpenter - "Please Please Please"
  • Beyoncé - "Texas Hold 'Em"
