The fire broke out at approximately 2:30 AM during a concert by hip-hop duo DNK, with over 1,500 people in attendance. Pyrotechnic effects reportedly ignited highly flammable ceiling materials, causing the fire to spread rapidly throughout the venue.
Survivor accounts describe scenes of panic as attendees rushed toward exits. Marija Taseva, 20, survived after being trampled in the ensuing chaos, though her 25-year-old sister remains missing and may have been transferred to Skopje for medical care.
Law enforcement has made one arrest and issued four additional warrants, with the club's owner among those detained. The government has declared a seven-day national mourning period and ordered immediate safety inspections of all nightclubs and large venues across the country.
Prime Minister Hristijan Mickoski has pledged a thorough investigation to determine responsibility and prevent future tragedies.
The majority of victims were young people between 14 and 24 years old, with 18 survivors remaining in critical condition. Hospital staff face challenges identifying victims due to missing identification documents.
The disaster has sparked nationwide discussions about venue safety regulations and fire prevention measures. As investigations continue, the country mourns the loss of young lives in what has become one of North Macedonia's most tragic events.
