The Eagles have welcomed guitarist Chris Holt to their lineup for their 2025 Sphere shows following Steuart Smith's retirement due to Parkinsonism diagnosis. Smith, who played with the band for 25 years, announced his departure citing performance issues related to his condition.
"It is with profound regret that, due to performance issues associated with my recently diagnosed Parkinsonism, I find that I must bow out of my role with the Eagles while I can still do so gracefully," Smith stated. Don Henley expressed the band's gratitude, noting that Smith "will always be a part of our musical family."
Chris Holt, an accomplished guitarist who has performed with Bob Dylan, Ringo Starr, James Taylor, and other notable artists, steps into the role with deep respect for his predecessors. His most recent work includes touring with Mike Campbell's Dirty Knobs.
Speaking to The Dallas Morning News, Holt acknowledged the significance of his new position: "I'm trying to fill the giant shoes of all three that came before me," referring to Stueart Smith, Don Felder, and Bernie Leadon. "It's some of the most beautiful guitar work ever recorded, in my opinion. It's the highest honor for me to do it and it's my duty to get it right."
The Eagles will continue their Sphere concerts through April 2025 with Holt on guitar. Prior to his debut performance, Holt shared his excitement on Facebook, stating, "S—t's gonna get very interesting for me this week."
