Roper joined Dualtone in 2002 as an intern and rose to become President and Partner, playing a crucial role in the signing and release of over 200 albums. Under his leadership, the label earned multiple Grammy nominations, four Grammy wins, and numerous Americana Music Association awards.
His notable achievements include championing successful albums by The Lumineers, Gregory Alan Isakov, Mt. Joy, Shakey Graves, Shovels & Rope, and many other acclaimed artists. Roper was known for his innovative approach in what he termed "Amerikinda," embracing diverse genres while maintaining a focus on exceptional songwriting.
Jeremiah Fraites of The Lumineers shared a touching memory of Roper's kindness: "When we were touring in our 15-passenger van, Paul showed up to the parking lot behind the venue in Nashville with beer and pizza. It was a small gesture on his side, but a massive one for us."
Dualtone's official statement praised Roper's leadership style, noting his "dedication, authenticity, humor, and kindness." He is survived by his wife and four children, leaving behind a legacy of integrity and passion for music that transformed Dualtone into a leading independent music label.
Those wishing to honor Roper's memory are encouraged to make donations to Corner to Corner, as requested by his family.
