The lawsuit was filed by Tykeiya Dore and Marc A. Stephens, who claim that "No Guidance" infringes on Dore's copyrighted track "I Got It." Stephens previously submitted multiple copyright infringement notices to YouTube and Sony Music Entertainment requesting the removal of Brown's song.

Brown's legal team has rejected these claims, stating they "lack merit" and arguing that:

  • The alleged similarities are based on unprotectable ideas
  • There is no substantial similarity between the songs
  • There's no evidence Brown had access to Dore's song

YouTube denied the takedown requests and suspended Stephens' account, stating they found no copyrighted work that warranted removal. The platform, along with parent companies Alphabet Inc. and Google, is also named in the lawsuit for alleged defamation after labeling Stephens' claims as "fraudulent."

The lawsuit includes evidence of copyright registrations, comparison videos, and email correspondence between the parties involved. The plaintiffs are seeking damages of at least $5 million.
