A new wave of classical music biopics is emerging, with two major productions currently in development: a Frédéric Chopin biopic and an Antonio Vivaldi feature film.

Polish production company Akson Studio's "Chopin, A Sonata in Paris" has been acquired by Paris-based Playtime. The film stars Eryk Kulm as Chopin and Lambert Wilson as King Louis Philippe, following the composer's transformative journey to Paris at age 21. The film is scheduled for release in Poland through Galapagos Films this year, with international distribution planned through Playtime.

Meanwhile, "Primavera," a Vivaldi biopic directed by opera director Damiano Michieletto, began filming in Rome in October. The period piece, loosely based on Tiziano Scarpa's novel "Stabat Mater," is produced by Indigo Film Production and co-produced by Warner Bros. Entertainment Italia. The film has secured distribution through France's Moana Films and received support from regional Italian film commissions.

These productions could signal a shift in the biopic landscape, potentially sparking a renaissance in classical music storytelling. While rock music biopics continue to dominate with upcoming films about Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, and Janis Joplin, these classical music features might pave the way for a new genre of historical music films in 2025 and beyond.

Nicolas Brigaud-Robert, co-CEO of Playtime, praised the Chopin project, stating, "Chopin is not only historically one of the world's greatest pianist and composer, but an amazing character, in many ways bigger than fiction. The film is visually stunning and absolutely gripping in its narrative."
