The film's solid performance amid the ongoing box-office recovery is expected to boost streaming listenership and physical sales of Dylan's music. In September, Dylan released a comprehensive 27-CD set featuring over 400 tracks, catering to dedicated fans.
Starring Timothée Chalamet (29) and Elle Fanning (26), A Complete Unknown may attract younger audiences to Dylan's music, similar to how Fleetwood Mac and other legacy acts have benefited from renewed interest in recent years. Dylan sold his recordings to Sony Music in early 2022, following the sale of his compositional rights to Universal Music Publishing Group in late 2020.
The film is based on Elijah Wald's book "Dylan Goes Electric!" which has reached #1 in Amazon's Rock Music and Folk & Traditional Music categories since Dylan's endorsement.
The success of A Complete Unknown could prompt more musical biopics, though documentaries remain popular in the industry. Recent examples include Disney+'s "The Beach Boys" (May 2023) and "Beatles '64" (November 2023), with an authorized Led Zeppelin documentary scheduled for February release.
