The acquisition includes over 250 master recordings from DWA Records, founded in 1989 by Roberto Zanetti and Francesco Bontempi. The catalog features iconic tracks such as Corona's "The Rhythm of the Night," Alexia's "Happy" and "Uh La La," and Zucchero's "Baila."
DWA Records has been instrumental in shaping Italo Disco, a genre that emerged in Italy during the late 1970s and peaked in the 1980s. The genre is characterized by electronic drums, synthesizers, and English lyrics, influencing modern Eurobeat, Italo dance, and Italo house music.
Key figures in the acquisition:
- Roberto Zanetti (Savage/Robyx): Started in the '70s with Santarosa and Taxi, known for hits like "A Love Again" and "Radio." Later produced for artists including Alexia, Corona, and Ice MC.
- Francesco Bontempi (Lee Marrow): Began as a drummer in the '70s, became a club DJ, and achieved success with hits like "Do You Want Me" and "Shanghai."
Warner Music Group plans to promote the catalog globally through innovative strategies, ensuring these classic tracks reach new audiences while preserving their cultural significance. The acquisition represents WMG's commitment to expanding its catalog beyond Anglo markets and investing in influential music genres.
