The new Tobacco and Vapes Bill, introduced to parliament, still includes bans on smoking outside schools, hospitals, and playgrounds. The legislation aims to reduce pressure on the National Health Service (NHS) and includes restrictions on youth smoking, making it some of the strictest anti-smoking regulation globally.

The British Beer and Pub Association had warned that outdoor smoking bans would have a "devastating impact" on venues already struggling with rising costs. Michael Kill, CEO of the Night Time Industries Association, welcomed the government's decision, noting that it "recognizes the important role our venues play as controlled, socially responsible spaces within communities."

Health Minister Wes Streeting emphasized the legislation's importance, stating, "Unless we act to help people stay healthy, the rising tide of ill-health in our society threatens to overwhelm and bankrupt our NHS."

The revised bill represents a compromise between public health concerns and the economic interests of the hospitality sector, allowing pubs, bars, and clubs to continue operating while maintaining patron choice.
