The UK music festival industry faces a severe crisis, with over 100 festivals projected to close in 2024. This unprecedented decline stems from multiple factors affecting the live events sector.

Key Factors Contributing to Festival Closures:

  • 30% increase in operational costs
  • Post-pandemic financial struggles
  • Brexit-related administrative burdens
  • Rising artist touring expenses
  • Inflation and energy crisis impacts
  • Locked-in ticket prices from 2019

Notable Festival Closures:

  • NASS Festival (30,000 capacity)
  • Leopollooza
  • Long Division
  • Nozstock The Hidden Valley
  • Bluedot
  • Barn On the Farm

The Association of Independent Festivals (AIF) proposes reducing VAT on festival tickets from 20% to 5% for three years to help the industry recover. This measure previously proved effective during COVID when the UK government implemented similar support for the live entertainment sector.

Current statistics show approximately one in six festivals have already ceased operations since the pandemic, with 36 cancellations in 2023 alone. Many festivals operated at a loss in 2022 while honoring tickets sold at 2019 prices, creating an unsustainable financial model that continues to impact the industry.
