The study, which analyzed the top 100 best-selling new American vehicles, reveals that alternative audio options are also widely available:
- SiriusXM: 92% of vehicles
- Android Auto and Apple CarPlay: 98% each
- HD Radio: Present in approximately two-thirds of new vehicles
- Built-in streaming apps: Increasing presence across manufacturers
GM vehicles stand out as an exception, with HD radio standardization limited to Cadillac models, representing roughly 20% of their fleet.
The widespread presence of AM radio holds particular significance for emergency communications. FEMA has invested heavily in the Emergency Alert System through AM radio infrastructure, making it crucial during natural disasters and emergencies. This importance has prompted multiple state Attorneys General to advocate for the AM Radio For Every Vehicle Act.
Despite competition from newer audio technologies, AM radio's resilience in modern vehicles underscores its continued importance, particularly for emergency broadcasting and public safety communications.
