The original creative team returns with Rob Reiner directing and the main trio - Michael McKean (David St. Hubbins), Christopher Guest (Nigel Tunfel), and Harry Shearer (Derek Smalls) - reprising their roles. The sequel features an impressive lineup of musical cameos, including Elton John, Paul McCartney, Garth Brooks, and Trisha Yearwood, alongside appearances from Paul Shaffer, Fran Drescher, and others.

To introduce new audiences to the franchise, the original 1984 film will receive a theatrical re-release with a restored print, followed by availability on streaming platforms.

The sequel comes after a significant legal victory for the creators, who settled a $400 million lawsuit against UMG's then-parent Vivendi in 2019. The lawsuit, filed in 2016, addressed soundtrack royalties, with the creators allegedly receiving only $98 in royalties between 1989 and 2006. Under the settlement, UMG maintains distribution rights for the original film's recordings, with rights eventually reverting to the creators.

Rob Reiner, who plays Marty DiBergi in both films, expressed enthusiasm about working with Bleecker Street to preserve Tap's legacy while creating fresh content for both new and existing fans.
