The MFFA, established in 2023, works alongside the National Cyber-Forensics and Training Alliance (NCFTA) to maintain a shared database of fraud markers. This collaboration enables members to identify and respond to fraudulent streaming activity in real-time.

Notable MFFA members include Downtown, Spotify, Amazon Music, SoundCloud, DistroKid, and Believe, among others. Merlin CEO Jeremy Sirota emphasized that this partnership aims to build "a more ethical digital marketplace" by protecting genuine artists' revenue and maintaining ecosystem trust.

This move comes at a crucial time when streaming services face increasing challenges from AI-generated music and fraudulent streaming activities. Recent incidents include:

  • A multimillion-dollar AI royalty scam discovered by Spotify
  • The emergence of streaming farm operations across various platforms
  • Suspicious activity involving multiple identical 50-second tracks from generic "ghost" artists

The alliance's efforts focus on preventing streaming fraud through:

  • Real-time tracking and investigation of suspicious activity
  • Collaborative fraud prevention measures
  • Enhanced protection for legitimate artists' revenue streams
  • Maintaining transparency and accountability in the digital music marketplace

Through this partnership, Merlin strengthens its position in protecting independent artists while contributing to the broader industry effort to combat streaming fraud and maintain the integrity of digital music distribution.
