Mariah Carey's Christmas Classic Sees Significant Drop in Streaming Numbers This Year
Mariah Carey's iconic holiday song "All I Want For Christmas Is You" is experiencing a significant decline in listenership according to recent data from Last.fm, marking a shift in the song's two-decade dominance of the holiday season.

The listening data reveals notable changes in consumption patterns over the past 20 years:
- 2005: Song primarily played during Thanksgiving week and December
- 2010-2017: Listening window expanded to include most of November
- 2018: Peak popularity with plays starting in September
- 2023-2024: Significant decline in early seasonal plays
- 35% decrease in October listenership
- 22% decrease in November listenership
Despite the declining numbers, Carey launched her "Christmas Time" tour on November 6, 2024, scheduled to conclude at Brooklyn's Barclays Center on December 17. The tour has faced some challenges, with reported incidents of audience fights during performances in both St. Louis and at CFG Bank Arena.
The decrease in listenership might indicate listener fatigue, particularly as the song's playing season has gradually extended earlier into the year. While December plays remain steady, the significant drop in early-season listening suggests changing consumer preferences for holiday music timing.
