Drawing from his background in hip-hop culture, Rock acknowledged his understanding of the performance's cultural significance. He noted that Lamar performed authentically for his audience, comparing it to his own career approach.

Rock attributed the performance opportunity to Jay-Z's involvement with the NFL, suggesting that Colin Kaepernick's anthem protests inadvertently led to increased diversity initiatives within the organization. He described Lamar's show as "exclusive" and praised its authenticity despite it differing from traditional Super Bowl performances.

The commentary comes shortly after Rock's own controversial performance at Jon Bon Jovi's Nashville bar on February 8. During a cover of "Proud Mary," Rock abruptly left the stage after becoming frustrated with the crowd's lack of participation, leaving his band to finish the song without him.
