Historic Regina Folk Festival Closes After 55 Years Due to Financial Pressures
The Regina Folk Festival, a beloved Canadian music institution running for over 50 years, has announced its permanent closure due to insurmountable financial challenges.

The closure reflects broader challenges in Canada's live music industry, which has experienced a 60% revenue decline since the pandemic. Festival organizing costs have increased by 30-40% since 2019, according to Festivals and Major Events Canada.
Despite taking a year off in 2023 to rebuild and restructure, the festival's board of directors determined by January that financial pressures and reduced operational capacity made continuation impossible. Key challenges included:
- Stagnant or reduced funding
- Rising operational costs
- Declining ticket sales
- Ongoing pandemic-related financial pressures
The organization is now processing refunds for 2024 RFF Insider tickets and 2023 "You Had to Be There" tickets. Ticket holders should expect refunds within the next few business days.
The Board of Directors will hold a special meeting this spring to discuss the organization's dissolution process. They expressed gratitude to their long-term supporters, including Canadian Heritage, City of Regina, SK Arts, Tourism Saskatchewan, and TD Bank Group.
For 55 years, the Regina Folk Festival served as more than just a music festival – it was a community cornerstone that created lasting memories for generations of attendees. The organizers encourage continued support for the arts while looking forward to new cultural initiatives that may emerge in its absence.
