Fleetwood Mac producer Ken Caillat and co-author Steven Stiefel have filed a federal lawsuit against the creators of Broadway's "Stereophonic," claiming copyright infringement of their 2012 memoir "Making Rumours."

The lawsuit, filed in New York federal court on October 1, alleges that "Stereophonic" copies substantial elements from their memoir, including characters, storylines, settings, and dialogue. Both works follow a young sound engineer recording an album with a five-member, British-American rock band in California during 1976-1977.

The Tony Award-winning play, written by David Adjmi, has generated over $20 million since its Broadway debut in April. Attorney Brian Williams claims the creators have profited by "sponging off" his clients' work.

Key points of the lawsuit:

  • The play allegedly recreates Caillat's unique perspective from within the recording studio
  • Multiple news outlets have noted similarities between the play and Fleetwood Mac's Rumours album
  • Adjmi's planned film adaptation could interfere with Caillat's own film adaptation plans

The plaintiffs seek unspecified monetary damages and an injunction to halt further exploitation of the Broadway play, including its performance, broadcast, and publication.
