The Metropolitan Detention Center (MDC) in Brooklyn, nicknamed "Diddy Jail" since Sean "Diddy" Combs' detention, is under federal investigation following serious security concerns. Multiple agencies, including the Bureau of Prisons and Justice Department's Inspector General's Office, have launched an interagency operation to address safety issues at the facility.
The investigation comes after two inmates were killed by fellow detainees and another was attacked with a makeshift ice pick. Nine inmates face charges for violent crimes committed within the facility. Despite these incidents, the Bureau of Prisons maintains there is "no active threat," stating the operation was pre-planned.
MDC Brooklyn, which houses approximately 1,200 inmates including Diddy, faces criticism for:
- Overcrowding
- Security lapses
- Understaffing
- Violent incidents
- Poor facility conditions
Diddy remains in detention while facing federal charges for sex trafficking and racketeering, to which he has pleaded not guilty. His presence has brought unprecedented attention to the facility's conditions. Additionally, he faces over 100 civil suits with allegations spanning from 1991 to 2024.
U.S. Attorney Breon Peace emphasized that "Violence will not be tolerated in our federal jails." The investigation aims to establish new protocols and implement reforms to ensure the safety of both staff and inmates. This federal probe could potentially influence standards in detention centers nationwide.
The operation's findings may lead to significant changes in MDC Brooklyn's management and security protocols, addressing longstanding concerns about the facility's conditions and safety measures.
