Dua Lipa's Legal Team Moves to Unite 'Levitating' Copyright Lawsuits in NYC Federal Court
Dua Lipa's legal team is seeking to consolidate two separate copyright infringement lawsuits over her hit song "Levitating" in New York federal court. The song, which has garnered over two billion Spotify streams, faces multiple allegations of unauthorized sampling.

The first lawsuit, filed in California by members of reggae band Artikal Sound System, claims "Levitating" copied elements from their 2017 song "Live Your Life." The plaintiffs argue that the similarity between the songs makes independent creation unlikely.
The second lawsuit, filed in New York, alleges "Levitating" is "substantially similar" to two older compositions: Cory Daye's "Wiggle and Giggle All Night" (1979) and Miguel Bosé's "Don Diablo" (1980).
Dua Lipa's attorneys have contested these claims, particularly in the New York case, stating that the songwriters never heard the original compositions. They argue that any similarities are limited to basic, unprotectable musical elements like descending scales and common rhythm patterns.
In their latest move, the defendants have filed a motion to transfer the California case to the Southern District of New York, aiming to address both lawsuits in a single forum. The legal team continues to update the court on the status of this consolidation effort.
