Drake vs Universal Music Defamation Case Moves Forward as Discovery Begins, Dismissal Motion Expected March 17
Discovery will proceed in Drake's defamation lawsuit against Universal Music Group (UMG), despite UMG's attempt to delay the process pending their upcoming dismissal motion due March 17th.

UMG recently requested to postpone an April 2nd pretrial conference, indicating that Drake had agreed to withdraw certain key allegations from his complaint. However, Drake's legal team opposed this delay, arguing it was an improper attempt to stay discovery without proper motion.
Drake's attorneys emphasized the ongoing nature of the alleged defamation, specifically referencing Kendrick Lamar's Super Bowl halftime show, which reached over 133.5 million viewers, as part of UMG's "defamatory campaign."
Judge Jeannette Vargas rejected UMG's request, stating: "It is not the practice of this Court to routinely stay discovery pending the outcome of a motion to dismiss." She noted that any discovery stay must be requested through a formal letter-motion and would be addressed at the April 2nd conference.

The case developments occur against the backdrop of an intensifying rap beef, with fans and artists continuing to exchange related comments on social media. UMG's dismissal motion, due by March 17th, will be a crucial next step in this high-stakes legal battle.
